Latvia In Latvia the total forest-covered area is 2,923,188 ha or 45% of its land area. With the average forest cover in Europe 33%, Latvia is a country rich in forest resources. The forest ownership is as follows: state-owned forests 1,472,054 ha (50.1%)49; other ownership forests (private, community, etc.) 1,471,518.1 ha (49.9%).
Not infrequently it is claimed that that Latvian woodlands are over-utilised and soon would be depleted completely. Of course, it may happen in the tropical countries where after clearing away forest the soil is degraded and trees do not regenerate. In Latvia, owing to natural factors (soils, climate) and the management practices (less need for farmlands) the forest cover has nearly doubled over the period between 1923 (23%) and 2005 (45.2%). Because of natural overgrowing of abandoned farmlands and also afforestations, the increase in forest cover is expected to continue. Along with an increase in forest-covered areas the entire standing volume by the beginning of 2005 is estimated at 573 million cu. m, which is 241 cu. m per head of the population.

FORESTS IN LITHUANIA IN GENERAL Forests make up one of the most important natural and indigenous resources in Lithuania. The general overview of forest statistics shows, that forest conditions in Lithuania are improving, forest area and timber resources are increasing. Resources accumulated in Lithuanian forests allows to further enhance sustainable forest development and fulfil social, environmental and economical functions of Lithuanian forests. The total average timber production per year in Lithuania is 5 mln m³. Around 1 mln m³ of timber comes from private forests.
The on-going restitution and land reform is creating a large number of private forest owners. At the end of this process approximately 50% of the forest land or over 950.000 hectares are envisaged to be in private hands. On 1 January 2004 there were 202.8 thousand forest owners and 630.3 thousands of hectares of private woodlots registered in the State Land Cadastre. The average size of forestland holding in Lithuania is 4.5 ha.
